In my opinion this race was seriously changed by the Toyota being driven by Jarno Trulli for the first 18 odd laps so much slower than Fernando Alonso that he slowed up the entire field behind him. This allowed Alonso enough of a gap to the rest of the field that he could go in for his first pit stop and still come out in front.
Michael Schumacher stressed that he could have done a lot better if not for Trulli as this slowed him down enough that J.P. Montoya was able to pass him while in the pits and then slowed him down further. The commentators I heard made light of this saying that the Ferrari is nowhere near the pace of the Renaults and Mclarens and I just don't understand where they get this from.
Another thing I can't quite understand is how the ITV commentators praised Alonso for his drive when quite clearly the driver of the day was Kimi Raikkonen who started in 13th and finished 2nd. The team of the day would also have to be Mclaren-Mercedes because J.P. Montoya could have ended up with a 3rd place starting from 9th place on the grid if his car had not given up on him.
Magny-Cours, as is typical with most formula one tracks these days, is a difficult track to pass on. This is compounded by the 2005 aerodynamic rule changes which makes it that much harder for driver's to follow closely to other cars because of the loss of grip. This was seen clearly in the "train" that formed behind the slow Toyota of Jarno Trulli while Alonso galloped away at the front.
I think Ferrari have a lot to offer if Bridgestone could just give them enough of a chance with the single lap qualifying. Take Trulli out the laps before the first round of pit stops and we could have seen a 4 or 5 car race for 1st position.
